I completed my first ever oil change today. It’s really not hard, I don’t understand why people would pay a minimum wage shop employee and trust them to do the job. Especially when we hear of those oil change shop horror stories where they drain the gearbox and double fill the engine etc. I’ve now had the car for 2500 miles and I’m pretty sure it was running conventional. So I bought Valvoline synpower, a quality oil filter, and a new drain plug crush washer. I headed over to my friend from the CU Rally Club’s house and he let me use his tools and oil drain pan. Everything is good! Except there’s a squeak coming from my alternator pulley bearing that’s indicative of imminent bearing failure. Oh well that’s for another day I guess!

Notice the snow, rain clouds, and green grass all in the same scene.

Good stuff!

I once changed the oil on a friend’s Outback. It was way easier than my Civic. The Civic’s filter is up behind the block, above the steering rack and next to the fire wall. There’s almost no way to change it without leaking a bit of oil down the back motor mount and over top of the exhaust.

I really can appreciate Subaru’s engineering for making an oil change as easy as it should be.

i just did my first ever oil change on the cobalt last sunday, piece of cake due to the cartridge oil filter thats acessed from the top of the engine and me doing my research and buying the right adapter to attach it to a rachet. the only problem i actually ran into was not setting the drain pan far enough back and getting dirty (and i mean jet black, it had been a while) oil all over my FIL’s garage floor. luckily they had spare kitty litter for me to clean it up with

I told your brother the story about a guy at the shop on E Quincy that got furious at a Mercedes canister/element style filter (engine hot, canister not hot - doesnt fit) throwing the canister at a wall. Yeah minimum wage is not what to pay people to be a lube tech. Go for experienced people. Also, good job!

Way to go!! You are officially a “Buru owner”. I have had many adventures with mine, including a broken timing belt. (It is so easy to swap engines in a Subaru). Keep that in mind and enjoy the greatest car made.

You must have either a NA or the turbo... because everyone curses whoever decided on the oil filter location for the supercharged.

People pay others to do it because most of the time it's cheaper than buying the filter and oil separately. Now if you're doing full synthetic, definitely do it on your own because there's a huge mark up for it at shops
